The history of the square in the center of Tashkent named after Amir Timur, the commander and founder of a huge medieval empire, began as early as in the XIX century, when Tashkent was the center of the Turkestan Military Command, composing the Russian Empire. It was established by order of general M. Chernyaev in 1882.

The Alisher Navoi State Academic Theatre

The grand opening of the theatre in honour of A.Navoi took place in November 1947, during the celebration of the 500th anniversary of A.Navoi. The modern building of the theatre was built under the project of academician in architecture A.V. Shusev, who was also the architect of Mausoleum of Lenin in Moscow.
