The grand opening of the theatre in honour of A.Navoi took place in November 1947, during the celebration of the 500th anniversary of A.Navoi. The modern building of the theatre was built under the project of academician in architecture A.V. Shusev, who was also the architect of Mausoleum of Lenin in Moscow.

Japanese prisoners of war from Quantoon army also took part in final stage of construction. Moreover, national artists of Uzbekistan displayed their mastery during finishing works.
Starting from ornamental bricks, numerous marble stairs, hand made carved oaken doors and ending with elegant gallery-arcades and lacy chandeliers - all is made in traditions of ta-lented national masters. Six rooms of theatre lobby, located in three floors on each side of the auditorium, are devoted to six regions belonged to Uzbek SSR in 1947: Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, Termez, Khorezm and Ferghana regions. Popular national masters of the republic under the direction of Usta Shirin Muradov, Usta Boltaev and others were invited from each region to decorate these rooms. For example, hall devoted for Bukhara was designed with ganch carving superimposed on the mirror surface. Such decoration element was first used during the building of Bukhara emir’s palace. The Khorezm hall is decorated with ganch panel repeating remarkable decorative woodcarving, typical for Khorezmian art.
The auditorium is ornamented with gypsum modelling and luxurious crystal chandelier, which weight is more than 3 tonnes. Artwork of theatre interior is completed with large panel made by national artist of Uzbekistan Chinghiz Akhmarov. The motive of pictures was taken from poems of the great uzbek poet of the middle ages Alisher Navoi.
The facade of the building is decorated with marble columns.
